DIGIPIN
CONTEXT
- Traditional PIN codes in India often lack geographical precision, especially in rural or unstructured areas.
- The need for accurate digital location identifiers is growing with the expansion of e-commerce, emergency services, and digital governance.
- In response, the Government of India launched DIGIPIN in 2025 under the Department of Posts to enhance address accuracy and service efficiency.
CONCEPT
- DIGIPIN stands for Digital Personal Identification Number.
- It is a ten-character alphanumeric code representing a 4×4 meter square on Indian land, including urban, rural, forest, and maritime zones.
- Developed by:
- India Post
- IIT Hyderabad
- National Remote Sensing Centre (ISRO)
- Key Features:
- Geo-coded & grid-based digital address system.
- Open-source, interoperable, and privacy-focused (doesn’t store personal data).
- Each DIGIPIN is linked to geographic coordinates, not names or property details.
- Complementary to existing 6-digit PIN codes, not a replacement.
