ENVISTATS INDIA 2025: ENVIRONMENT STATISTICS
CONTEXT
Released on 5th June 2025 by MoSPI during the National Workshop on “Alternate Data & Frontier Technologies.”
- Part of India’s ongoing effort to align with UN’s FDES 2013 framework for environmental data.
- The 8th edition of EnviStats India, initiated in 2018 by NSO, reflects India’s environmental trends and informs evidence-based policymaking.
CONCEPT – WHAT IS ENVISTATS?
- A comprehensive compilation of environmental statistics sourced from various ministries and departments.
- Structured around 6 components of FDES 2013 (e.g., environmental conditions, resources, residuals).
- Aids in policy formulation, climate action, natural resource management, and sustainability planning.
Structural Enhancements in 2025 Edition:
- Expert group recommendations included for design improvement & data expansion.
- Indicators mapped with FDES Basic Set and organized component-wise.
- Includes new indicators on:
- Access to electricity, transport, sanitation
- List of Ramsar Sites (wetlands)
CURRENT – KEY HIGHLIGHTS & STATS
Climate Trends:
- Mean temperature rose from 25.05°C (2001) to 25.74°C (2024).
- Min/Max temp also increased → (19.32°C ➡️ 20.24°C) and (30.78°C ➡️ 31.25°C).
- Rainfall: High year-to-year variability, but no clear long-term trend.
Energy:
- Thermal power grew from 7.92 lakh GWh to 13.26 lakh GWh (2013–24).
- Renewables surged from 65,520 GWh to 2.25 lakh GWh in the same period.
Fish Production:
- Inland fisheries doubled from 61.36 lakh tonnes to 139.07 lakh tonnes.
- Marine increased modestly from 34.43 lakh tonnes to 44.95 lakh tonnes.
Biodiversity:
- India contributes ~6% to global faunal species.
- Notable: Soil ecosystem hosts 22,404 species, highlighting ecological richness.
Expenditure Patterns:
- Environment Sustainability Sector leads with ₹2433.24 crore (2021-22).
- Conservation shows upward trend.
- Agro-forestry remains lowest funded.
